Psalm
34:18-19 The Lord is near to those who
have a broken heart,
and it saves such as have a contrite spirit.
Many are the afflictions of the righteous,
but the LORD delivers them out of them all.
Years ago, a
man was driving his car down the road when the engine sputtered and
stalled. Try as he might, the driver
could not restart the engine. As he
stood glaring at it, a polished black limo pulled up beside him. The chauffeur hastily jumped out and opened
the back door for an elegantly dressed gentleman. The man asked the driver about his problem
and offered to take a look under the hood.
The man scoffed at the idea of such a finely dressed man having any
knowledge of mechanics, but no one else stopped to help. So, he accepted the assistance and threw open
the hood.
The gentleman leaned over the engine, twisted a few wires, capped a few
cables, and tightened a few plugs. Then he told the driver to try to start the
car. This time, the car responded
immediately. As he closed the hood, the
driver thanked the gentleman profusely.
Then he asked for his name. The
gentleman replied simply, “Henry Ford.”
Henry Ford
had made the car, so he knew exactly what was wrong with it and how to fix
it! Jesus Christ is the One by Whom, for
Whom, and through Whom, everything was made.
He knows what is wrong in your life and how to fix it.
Does your
life need mending? Who or what do you
know that needs “fixing”? Jesus, as the
creator of life, knows how to make it work.
Let Him take charge. Ask Him to
put it right. 1
Count Your Blessings
When
upon life’s billows you are
tempest-tossed,
When you are discouraged, thinking all is lost,
Count your many blessings, name them one by one,
And it will surprise you what the Lord hath done.
Count your blessings, name them one by one;
Count your blessings, see what God hath done;
Count your blessings, name them one by one,
And it will surprise you what the Lord hath done.
So amid the
conflict, whether great or small,
Do not be discouraged, God is over all;
Count your many blessings, angels will attend,
Help and comfort give you to your journey’s end. 2
When we count
our blessings, we are sure to discover that we have far more than we thought we
did. In fact, when we focus on our
blessings, something wonderful and encouraging usually occurs. God gives us more! Yes, indeed, he loves it when we are thankful
and joyful for the abundance he has provided for us. He loves it, even more, when we joyfully
share our blessings with those around us, spreading the good without asking for
anything in return. Our appreciation
makes God smile, and then we receive even more blessings to be grateful for.
Blessings
don’t have to be big. In fact, the most
treasured blessings often come to us in the form of love from the people in our
lives and kindness from strangers we meet. So often, blessings come from what
we give away, rather than what we receive.
From our homes we live in and the things we surround ourselves with to
the greater gifts of faith, hope, and love, we are immersed in an abundant sea
of blessings, more than we could ever count.
To those who
have, more shall be given. And when we
ask, we shall receive. So look all
around you right now in this moment, and count your blessings, big and
small. Then watch as even more blessings
come into your life in the most amazing ways—a grateful heart makes you
happier, and it makes God happy too.
PRAY WITH ME:
Dear God, thank You for teaching me that praising you is a blessing to
me. How wise You are to request and
graciously accept our praise, no matter how it is delivered! Not everyone can sing well, but it is all a
joyful noise to you. Let us praise you
with our lips and our lives as long as we live down here on planet Earth. And
Lord, how I look forward to the day when I’m part of the great cloud of
witnesses praising you face-to-face!
Open my heart to all the blessings you have offered me. I go through life numb, blind, and deaf,
unable to sense what you have placed in front of me. Help me raise my eyes from the ground and
instead focus them on Jesus and the world around me, taking in all of your
creations and appreciating them for what they are – testaments of your love for
me and mankind. You are a great big
wonderful God. You are good all the
time. Please help me shift my eyes to focus on the good things, to see the world as half full rather than half
empty. Take my heart from the pit of
doom and show me You again that I may recognize just how much You have blessed
me; I want to be blessed to be a blessing.
AMEN
